What is the Volusia Literacy Council?

It is an independent, nonprofit organization, governed by a volunteer board of directors. The Council’s mission is to improve the basic literacy skills of adults and increase literacy awareness.

What programs does Volusia Literacy Council offer?

The Council offers literacy instruction for adults (age 16 and above) in reading, math, writing, workplace and life skills and for adults for whom English is not their first language. Free instruction is provided by trained volunteer tutors in one-on-one or small-group settings.

What is required to be a tutor?

Volunteer tutors must be at least 18 years of age, have a GED or high school diploma, and possess the ability to read and speak English fluently. Free training and materials are provided for tutors by Program Directors before they are matched with students. Programs Directors are there to guide tutors during the entire time they meet with students.

Do I need previous teaching experience?

No. Volusia Literacy Council will provide you with required training and support.

Should a tutor know a language other than English?

Knowledge of a language other than English is not required.

How are tutoring assignments made?

A tutor is matched with a student or a small group of students by a Program Director, taking into account the needs, skills, goals and location of the student and tutor. Time and overall availability are also considered.

Where does tutoring take place?

Tutoring is conducted at numerous pre-approved public locations throughout Volusia County.

How often do tutors meet with their students?

Tutors and students are asked to meet twice a week for a minimum of one to two hours per session.

Is a tutor expected to teach a certain length of time?

Tutors and students alike are asked to make a one-year commitment.

Is there a cost for the training or tutoring?

All training and tutoring materials are provided free of charge.

What resources are available to assist me with my tutoring?

The Program Director is ready to provide tutors with the necessary and supplemental materials for tutoring sessions, based on the needs of the students.
